Fast Buck : The End Of An Era

Friday night saw a very momentous occasion at the Black Horse in Eastcote – The last ever Fast Buck gig. Yes, Ed and Richard played for the last time as a duo, as Richard has decided to hang up his keyboards and call it a day !  To be clear and avoid any abiguity or confusion, that only means Fast Buck The Duo and not the full Fast Buck Band. So Richard will still be making appearances with the full Fast Buck band and not the duo.  There we are – all as clear as a muddy PA system !

Fast Buck

Anyway, for those of you who missed it, the place was jam packed as you can probably imagine, and there were plenty of loyal Fast Buck followers ( ‘Buckettes’ ) present to witness this swansong.  It was a  most enjoyable evening but arguably a bit on the overcrowded side. Still, some would consider this a small price to pay for witnessing the end of an era and a fond farewell to a much loved duo. Could they reform sometime in the future ?  Well, I’d say there’s definitely more chance of it happening than the Beatles getting back together again.

Ed was in action again on Saturday night at the Six Bells in Kingston. This time he was teamed up with fellow singer / guitarist Andy Locke in the guise of the recently formed  ‘A&E’. It was a fairly quiet evening punter-wise but very good none the less and they are set to perform together regularly.

On that note, I should point out that for news of future A & E ( Andy and Ed ) gigs and Ed’s ‘All By Myself” Tour, and of course Fast Buck ( The Band !!! ) …… click on the  Fast Buck link, down below in the right hand column. You will then find yourself transported to Ed’s website which, aside from a gig guide, has bunches of other entertaining stuff too !  So why not have a look ? !

Anyway, hopefully it won’t be long before I’m ‘back on the road’ again.  Watch this space !

In the meantime please feel free to keeping logging on to RKmusic for all the latest !

BFN, Rob.

  1. Hi,
So interested in your Isle of Wight Festival page. Can you tell me how you knew that Hayles/Hells Field that you describe was the actual festival site of the first Isle of Wight Festival for sure? Did you ask at the farmhouse? Please could you email me with an answer. I’m doing a project and I’d really appreciate knowing the exact location.
    Cheers

    1. Hi Caroline.
      Hi Caroline,
Thanks for your message. It’s nice to know someone actually logs onto my site and reads what I’ve written – especially as it takes me a while to put these things together due to my typing skills … or lack of them !
Nearly all the information on my IOW web page, I’ve taken from the book I refer to, entitled ‘Message To Love’. I was lucky to stumble across a copy of it in an old secondhand shop in Ryde a few years ago. The book contains a lot of interesting facts as well as information that is possibly rather hazy, something which the author Brian Hinton does point out. The location of the ’68 site is one of these. However, armed with the information given in the book and a map of the Island, I managed to trace what I’m now 99% sure, is the exact location.
The book quotes : ” … forty acres of barley stubble known as Hayes Field – translated by the press into ‘Hell Field’ – on Ford Farm, Near Godshill but nearer Niton, just off the main road from Newport to Ventnor. ”
Having found the main road on the map and investigating the area suggested by the book, I found Ford Farm Lane, the “turning just off the main road”. There, about 50 yards or so down the lane, was was Ford Farm house with the large barley field directly opposite. Although the book does say details are hazy, I’m pretty sure in my own mind that this was the venue.
Well, I think that just about covers it. Hope this helps.
If you can find a copy anywhere of the book, ‘Message To Love’ by Brian Hinton, I’m sure you’ll find it as fascinating as I have. It was probably responsible for my interest in the IOW concerts in the first place.
There maybe the odd copy floating about on ebay or Amazon. Failing that, if you need any further information on the subject, you can always contact me and I’ll see what I can turn up.
I hope your project goes well.
      All the best.
      Cheers,
      Rob.

  2. Hi there Rob,
I randomly found your site when i was searching for any trace of an old freind of mine, Simon Freed.
Could you please email me so we can chat in private?
    Thanks.

    1. Hi Greg.

      Thanks for your message.
Yes, there are one or two references to Simon on my site. He was a regular at the Jam Night at The Rising Sun many years ago.
As you may know he suffered with Cystic Fibrosis and sadly died about twelve years ago.
Mark Chudley, who was quite a close muso friend of his, organised a nice CD in Simon’s honour just after his death.
I don’t know if he’s got any left. I may be able to get hold of a copy, if you’re interested.
If there’s anything else you want to know, I’ll try to help if I can – just let me know.

      Cheers,
      Rob.
